GUERNSEY'S fulfilment sector has contracted by around 50% since the loss of low value consignment relief, Commerce and Employment has confirmed.

However, it said that bulk mail and fulfilment businesses still accounted for around 200 jobs in the island.

The department's comments followed confirmation that gardening company Thompson and Morgan had pulled out of the island because of the impact the loss of LVCR had on its business.

'Thompson and Morgan indicated in the latter half of last year that it would be relocating from Guernsey in response to the removal of low value consignment relief,' said a Commerce and Employment spokesman.

'The department was naturally disappointed to learn of the company's intentions but recognised that it was a commercial decision.'
