INSURANCE companies were inundated with claims yesterday as islanders began to count the cost of what many called 'snowmaggedon' – March's unprecedented blizzards.

It was estimated that repairing damage to properties and vehicles would run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Cars and vans were abandoned in the upper parishes, leaving several roads impassable.

Network Insurance director Douglas Goater said it received more than 100 calls in just a few hours yesterday morning.
