IT'S not over until the fat lady sings was the message from Guernsey FC fans who remain hopeful that they can turn around a 3-1 deficit in the second leg of the FA Vase semi-final.

Despite a 3-1 home defeat to Spennymoor Town on Saturday, supporters of all ages were still dreaming of Wembley and insisted stranger things had happened in the game of football.

The second leg will take place away this Saturday on what will hopefully be an improved playing surface compared to Footes Lane – a factor that islanders hope may play in Guernsey FC's favour.

Some loyal fans had been up with rollers throughout the night to help get the waterlogged pitch into a playable condition.

Among the most senior supporters was great-grandmother Betty Thompson, 84, who still had hope that Guernsey FC could come back from the first leg deficit.

'We are very proud of our Guernsey boys,' she said. 'I think they can still beat them.'

A helicopter is used to blow water off the pitch.
