POLICE are investigating allegations that four States Works bin men pocketed money from private business collections – at the expense of parish residents.

It is understood that the workers have been sacked following the claims.

Guernsey Police yesterday confirmed that officers are investigating the accusations, relating to St Peter Port parish collections.

A source claimed that the four employees were caught carrying out private collections, but then mixing that rubbish with the St Peter Port parish waste, for which States Works has the contract.

It has been claimed this resulted in an increase in the tipping charge for St Peter Port waste – calculated on tonnage – which ultimately saw the parish being charged extra for its waste collections.
