AIRPORT runway contractor Lagan has refused to deny a claim that a bitumen spill in its southern compound may have been bigger than previously reported.

Lagan Construction Group senior contracts manager Steve Turner said he was aware of the allegation by the Forest douzaine.

But he said it would be inappropriate to comment given that an independent investigation by Environmental Health and Guernsey Police had been completed.

'Lagan worked closely with the relevant authorities during and after the incident and we want to thank them for the way in which this incident was dealt with,' he said.

An incident in November had led to a very small quantity of tackcoat - used as an adhesive material in the overlay of the asphalt runway and taxiways - being spilt accidentally, he said. Following extensive investigations, it had been confirmed that there was no water pollution, nor was there any risk of pollution.
