LANDLORDS and tenants of multi-occupancy properties are being warned about a spate of burglaries aided by non-secure exit doors.

Crime reduction adviser Andy Goodall, pictured, said three crimes had occurred within the last two weeks – two burglaries at lodging houses and a theft of a benefit cheque taken from one property that had no secure mail system for occupants.

'When we are talking about multi-occupancy, we're referring to lodging houses, apartment blocks and blocks of flats,' he said.

'If the main exit door is unsecured any offender can walk off the street and enter and their offences are done out of view. All these occurred during daylight.

'My point of view is that both the tenant and landlord have an element of responsibility and duty of care to one another.
