CANCER charities are hopeful that with the amount of awareness and support work being carried out, Guernsey will see a reduction in the disease in the coming years .

Findings released in the Channel Island Cancer Registration Report showed Guernsey levels were significantly higher than in Jersey or the south-west of England.

On average, there were 608 new cases of malignant tumours in the island between 2007 and 2009.

But local support and research groups were hopeful that with the amount of good work that goes on in the island, the rate would come down.

Hope for Guernsey has been carrying out research into both breast and prostate cancer.

Founder and English Channel swimmer Roger Allsopp, pictured, praised Guernsey's efforts and felt that the island was very wisely focused on 'achievable goals'.
