A STATES property could get a new lease of life, providing vital emergency housing.

Epworth House, on Les Grandes Maisons Road, is currently the responsibility of the Housing Department.

But on Monday the Treasury and Resources Department approved the principle of a 21-year, no-rent lease to the Sarnia Housing Association.

The charity provides emergency accommodation for families and some older islanders in its three properties – Tamaru, Albion House and Chilcott House.

But it currently has a waiting list of 21 applicants – 19 families and two older people – and the list is continually replenished with people in desperate need of housing.

Director of Housing Strategy Jim Roberts said the department was always examining its properties and it was felt the rambling layout of Epworth and its current state made it unsuitable for States accommodation.
