PARISH waste collectors could see their businesses increase rather than being 'squeezed out' if centralised kerbside collections were introduced, Public Services has said.

In a letter in today's Guernsey Press, minister Paul Luxon addressed the issue, which has caused great concern for many parishes.

At a parochial meeting on Monday night, St Saviour's residents said they wanted an assurance that their waste collector, Clint Blondel, would be protected before they agreed to centralised kerbside recycling.

Deputy Luxon, pictured, said an interim scheme later this year would enable the department to explore the practical issues and, if necessary, adapt the system before it settled on final arrangements.

'It will purely be for recyclables, so will have no impact on the existing parish arrangements for black bag collections, or on the contractors who deliver that service,' he said.
