UNDERCOVER police operations will hit smokers who drop cigarette butts in Town with on-the-spot fines.

Plain-clothed officers from the Neighbourhood Police Team are issuing £70 fines in a drive to reduce cigarette litter.

The St Peter Port operations will take place without prior warning during the summer.

PC Robbie Dover said they would be enforcing all forms of littering, but there would be a special emphasis on cigarette butts - a cause of regular complaints.

'Ignorance will not be an excuse,' he said. 'We have highlighted it before and cannot just keep giving warnings. We are just asking people to have a bit of respect for their environment.'
