TRACES of harmful chemical PFOS, sprayed onto a plane crash site on Forest Road, has been polluting the Petit Bot stream and affecting milk produced by cows grazing there for the last 14 years.

However, authorities have assured islanders that the pollution has not posed a risk to public health.

It follows an announcement by Public Services that it has gone out to tender for work to remove 3,000 tonnes of soil, in an area of roughly 60 metres by 30 metres and up to two metres deep, from the field behind the houses opposite Forest Road Garage.

A similar operation has already been carried out at the airport, where an estimated 14,000 tonnes of soil contaminated by the chemical, which was contained in firefighting foam, was removed.
