CRITICISM that a report highlighting health and social inequality was depressing and lacked credible evidence saw tempers flare during yesterday's States debate.

The attack on the Medical Officer of Health's annual report came from Commerce and Employment minister Deputy Kevin Stewart, pictured, who argued its negative outlook was unrealistic and did not demonstrate the good work being done by departments.

This, he said, was counter-productive when trying to stimulate the economy as such documents were read 'wider' than Guernsey.

He received a round of applause from deputies when he returned to his seat.

However, his words had the opposite effect on a number of politicians, the first being Deputy Andrew Le Lievre, who said 'thank goodness' Deputy Stewart was not on the Social Policy Group.
