PLANS to house the Asterix Roman wreck in a museum at Oatlands have been scrapped after a proposed public-private partnership fell apart.

And now time is running out for the historic ship.

Guernsey Museums director Jason Monaghan, pictured, said the maritime museum project, which has planning permission, could not move forward.

The proposals were revealed last year and would have seen a purpose-built museum put up on the south of the St Sampson's site finally to display the timbers of the vessel, which was found in St Peter Port Harbour in 1982.

'The timescale upon which Oatlands wanted to move forward with the project could not be matched by us,' Dr Monaghan said.

Plans are now being redrawn from scratch to ascertain the exact costs of displaying the wreck.
