MASSIVE disruption of the island's bus service is expected today after drivers voted for an immediate 24-hour strike at an emergency meeting last night.

It is unclear exactly how many drivers have agreed to join the wildcat industrial action – but what is certain is bus users face a day of extremely limited service.

A driver who attended the meeting, but who wanted to remain anonymous, said 22 drivers went and the vote is thought to have been unanimous.

He expected those not present would support the action, though he 'could not speak for about 10 drivers.'

Despite the cancellation of scheduled services, the company is endeavouring to run the school buses. However, although this morning's services have run it says there could be problems running buses for schools this afternoon since more drivers are required.

The Employment Relations Service has said that it is ready to step in and arrange talks 'at a moment's notice' in the wake of the strike.

'Conciliation of this sort is designed to help parties identify the issues, and explore the options to move matters forward,' said the service in a statement.

'However, if agreement cannot be reached, further dispute resolution options are available and the matter may be referred to the Industrial Disputes Officer (IDO).'
