ISLANDERS are being asked for their views on renewable energy and the future of Guernsey's electricity supply as part of a three-year research project.

A University of Exeter student, Bouke Wiersma, is focusing his PhD on the perception and views of offshore renewable energy such as tidal power.

Jointly supported by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and Commerce and Employment's Renewable Energy Team the research is described as being 'industry-leading' and it is hoped the project will provide a 'comprehensive assessment of islanders' views' on the future of energy supply in Guernsey.

In-depth workshops and a survey will be among several studies planned to run over an 18-month period beginning this autumn.

RET chairman Jeremy Thompson, pictured, said the study should assist in deciding on the make-up of Guernsey's electricity supply in the future.
