ROUSSE residents want other island priorities to be handed funding rather than spending millions of pounds on future coastal defences near their homes.

Many dismissed concerns over a breach of the Rousse coastline, which has been identified as one of the 'at risk' stretches around Guernsey.

Environment has bid for £20m. for new defences at St Sampson's Harbour and Belle Greve Bay, but said that a total of £55m. would have to be spent over the next 30 years to mitigate flood risks.

Lorry driver Mark Baudains, 47, pictured, had never seen major flooding, even during high tides.

'I just think the States could be spending the money on other priorities,' he said.

Michelle Neves, 48, was another who would rather see investment made elsewhere by the States.
