A RISE in packet and parcel volumes made Guernsey Post an additional £1m. in profits last year.

While traditional mail volumes, excluding bulk mail, declined by 11% in 2012, the amount of packets and parcels rose by 13%.

The increase saw postmen deliver around 1.5 million items in total last year.

Chief executive Boley Smillie, pictured, said that as technology continued to threaten the core of the postal business, it was also opening up another opportunity.

'Internet shopping continues to grow at an exceptional rate and Guernsey Post continues to play a key role in the supply chain for Bailiwick customers,' he said.
