BUSINESSES in Town have called on shoppers to help save local retail.

Following the release of figures in the Guernsey Post annual report, which showed online retailing had jumped by 13% in the last year alone, Town retailers have said if islanders want a thriving retail sector they need to support it.

Many are also calling on the States to do more to help local businesses.

Melanie Jefferies, owner of boutique shop Cockadoodle in Mill Street, said that unless things change in Town, high street shopping would probably not survive.

Commerce and Employment yesterday said its retail strategy group's report was nearing completion and the board should receive it before the end of the month.
