THE leader of the Royal Navy diving team said that helping to detonate the 'Bluebell bomb' was the pinnacle of his career.

Members of the Southern Diving Unit One team, based in Plymouth, were drafted in to help after police officers discovered the 12ft mine in the wood last week. It was safely detonated at sea on Sunday night.

Petty Officer (Diver) Nick Frost led the team and said the whole event had left a lasting impression on them.

The five-man unit arrived on Friday morning and identified the device as a British air drop ground mine, dropped by the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

PO Frost said Guernsey Police contacted the team and sent a picture of the device, which weighed almost a ton.
