ABANDONED cars, fly-tipping and vandalism are behind a Culture and Leisure decision to apply for car parks at Footes Lane to become terre a l'amende.

The car park, near the Garenne Stand bus stop and which goes as far back as the old rugby club, is heavily used during sporting events and by the Grammar School.

A department spokesman said cars abandoned in the area led to other issues which took up its time. 'These vehicles are not only an unsightly mess but they could in some cases also be a hazard. A large amount of time is spent trying to contact owners of these vehicles and arranging for their removal.'

Previously it has also had to pay the dumping charge because the car owner has left the island.

Neighbours welcomed the decision. One, who had lived in the area for 12 years, said at some points up to a dozen cars had been 'left to rot' in the car park.
