ALDERNEY schoolchildren were starting the autumn term this year with smart new additions to their uniform.

St Anne's School junior pupils Bennett Blackham, Owen Carre, Holly Neill and Amelie Carpenter, pictured, wore ties for the first time. Bennett commented: 'It's a bit disturbing but it's clip-on, so it's not too bad.'

Seniors meanwhile opted for shocking-pink ties. They usually get to choose the colour of their sweatshirt but because they now wear blazers had to find something else to customise. Headmaster Michael Gaunt said: 'We asked what colour tie they wanted and they chose shocking-pink. So when I was in Guernsey I bought a dozen from Claire's Accessories. It's what they wanted and we were happy to go with that.'

The infants swapped their sombre navy blue sweatshirts for bright 'Alderney blue' – the colours the local football team plays in.
