easyJet seeks licence to operate in Guernsey

EASYJET has applied for a licence to operate flights to and from Guernsey.

A spokesman said it was applying to Commerce and Employment for one so it could review all options and decide if a route was commercially viable. He also said the low-cost airline was not in a position to announce to which airport it planned to fly.

The company bought Flybe's Gatwick slots earlier this year and has already announced plans to operate a Jersey to Gatwick route.

A member of the Easyjet ground operations team was in Guernsey recently, assessing whether it would be suitable to run a route from Guernsey Airport. But the airline says a decision has not yet been made on whether it would take over Flybe's Gatwick route, which will cease from April 2014.

Last week, Guernsey Airport deputy director Ashley Nicholas said the man had spent two days examining the operation and looking at Guernsey's infrastructure.
