AN INDEPENDENT review into HSSD has said the department could save between £6m. and £9m. a year by changing the way services are delivered.

However, the department has cast doubt on the report by Health Systems Workshop saying it contained many inaccuracies in its data comparisons.

In the report, HSW said it had found significant inefficiencies in the production and delivery of secondary and tertiary services in Guernsey.

'Allowing for data deficiencies, particularly in inpatient admissions and day case recording, PEH activity levels appear adequate compared with those expected and the quality of services delivered appears adequate,' it said.

'Various improvements could be made to the internal management and operational efficiency of the PEH as noted in the body of this review.

'But what stands out in this review is that the cost of on-island secondary and tertiary care is between 13%-21% more than it need be – this equates to between £6.2m. and £9.4m. of potential savings per annum.'
