THE future of St Andrew's Primary and St Sampson's Infants remains in the balance as States members ended today's debate without making the final decision on closure proposals.

Education's plan to shut the schools sparked a passionate debate as the different sides set out their case.

Department minister Robert Sillars pleaded with his fellow deputies to put aside sentiment, prejudices and claims from lobby groups to support the department.

But others have cast doubt on Education's figures and justification for closure.

Deputy Mark Dorey's amendment to delay changes to catchment areas for a year was defeated by 34 votes to 11.

Debate continues tomorrow morning at 9.30am.
