WORK is under way to build the Quayside stage kitchen that will show free live cookery demonstrations throughout the Guernsey Press HomeLife Show which opens tomorrow.

It will be in the concourse for the event, which begins at midday.

Channel Island Chef of the Year Daniel Green, of The Auberge, will be joined by other local foodies including Chris Sloan and James Ferguson, from Sueco, Simon McKenzie, from Urban Kitchen, and Fenella Maddison, from Torteval Cheese.

Mr Green will be in the kitchen every afternoon.

'On Friday and Sunday, Ray Watts, of Meadow Court Farm, will be with me to show how you can cook different and cheaper cuts of beef which are actually tastier than the average steak,' he said.

'These are more fashionable and easier on the money and include cuts such as onglet steak.'

On Saturday, Daniel is preparing a variety of starters with a difference.

Chocolatier Ben Le Prevost will be tempting the taste buds on Sunday as he shows audiences how to make rosemary caramel chocolate while Cara Harris, of Amazing Cakes, turns her attention to Christmas with ideas on decorating a Christmas cake and making edible festive angels.

The full kitchen programme can be found on the show information page on the event website.

Reducing waste will be a key theme at the show with extra recycling facilities for exhibitors and visitors and Public Services' staff on hand with information and advice.

The Department's Reduce Reuse Recycle stand will feature money-saving kitchen tips, space-saving ideas for recycling storage and other practical advice and demonstrations.

Visitors will be able to take part in research and have an opportunity to win a Kindle Fire tablet computer or a smoothie maker.

The department is also arranging to produce compost from bins full of fruit peel and other green material that will be produced at the show.

Recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said events like this could generate a lot of packaging and other disposable materials and it was therefore important to encourage exhibitors to get involved with reducing waste and recycling as much as possible.

With over 70 exhibitors filling both the Sir John Loveridge and David Ferguson Halls the organisers are confident there will be something of interest for everyone.

Show director for organisers Effective Communications, Julie Settle, said businesses from the UK, Jersey and Guernsey will be at the show.
