Sark votes in former constables at by-election

TWO former constables who were last night's poll toppers at the Sark by-election have vowed to be the voice of the people within Chief Pleas.

Matthew Joyner and Alan Blythe yesterday secured 178 votes each at the polling station and said that their previous experience as officials had convinced them to seek election to represent island residents.

The two other successful candidates – Peter Byrne (154 votes) and Paul Burgess (137) – join them to fill the four vacancies as conseillers.

Self-employed gardener Mr Joyner, 36, who has three children and another one on the way, said he wanted to lend a voice to the younger people of Sark.

'As a constable I was sitting on committees. You had a voice but it was not always heard,' he said.

'In the time spent away from being a constable it became more apparent there needed to be someone there with a voice who would stand up in committees and speak with other people's interests rather than just the Chief Pleas interests' at heart. That is what everyone needs. Everyone needs a voice. I'm a young man, a family man, and have a lot of interests, the same as a lot of younger people in Sark.'

Plumber Mr Blythe, 53, also promised to represent the views of the people of Sark.
