A POLICE negotiator had to talk a 22-year-old man out of a crane cab in the early hours yesterday, during a three hour stand-off.

Deputy harbourmaster Tony Pattimore said it would take several days to determine how much damage was done to the structure, but the provisional estimate was that it would cost at least £6,000 to fix.

Guernsey Police have revealed few details about the incident, which started at around 5am on New Year's Day.

Inspector Lisa Sylvester said the man had been arrested for criminal damage.

'This male was located in one of the crane cabs at St Sampson's Harbour and was causing damage,' she said.

'Items were thrown out of the cab by the male.'

The area was cordoned off by police and the man was detained by officers by 8am.
