Two Sark hotels are set to close

TWO hotels are being closed in Sark this season in a move that could cost the island up to around 30 jobs.

Sark Island Hotels group, an arm of Sark Estate Management, has announced it will not be reopening either the Aval du Creux or Petit Champ hotels for the 2014 season, due to a slump in tourism in Sark.

Hotel group manager Dawn Manger said that the Aval du Creux would temporarily open its doors during the Sark Folk Festival to honour existing bookings and anyone pre-booked at the Petit Champ during this popular event would be catered for at its other establishments.

While it was a commercial decision, Ms Manger said it had been brought about by anti-business policies within Sark and the local government's refusal to get behind its tourism industry – particularly in not opening up the island to visitors directly from France.

'There is no point opening four hotels all season long with the amount of visitors we are going to get,' she said.
