The UK could intervene in Sark governance, Justice Committee warns

OUTSIDE intervention from the UK government could be forced upon Sark if there was any threat to its government operating fairly and robustly, it has been told.

The warning came from the Justice Committee in its review of the relationship between the Ministry of Justice and the Crown Dependencies, including Sark.

The committee also warned that disputes between different groups on the island should not get in the way of implementing 'democratic processes' and planning a 'sustainable future for the island'.

It also praised the former Minister of State for Justice Lord McNally and his team at the MoJ for following the committee's previous recommendations of keeping a 'watching brief' on good government within Sark.

'We deeply regret the apparently intractable discord on Sark, as witnessed on our visit and in the written evidence we have received,' the committee said.

'We reiterate our conclusion that, just as the establishment of democratic government in Sark was a matter of good government, any threat to the ability of that system to operate fairly and robustly has the potential to raise good government issues which might require UK Government intervention.'
