Policy Council yesterday revealed that 246 people applied for the package, which offered a maximum of 100 weeks' pay for those accepted.

It will cost taxpayers £4.3m. initially, but that will be paid back in just over two years.

'This programme was put in place to make savings through reducing posts without reducing the ability of departments to deliver services,' said Deputy Allister Langlois, the Policy Council member with responsibility for employment matters.

'Those objectives have been met and the programme has delivered significant benefits to the organisation.'

Of the 68 employees accepted, 22 were from the Education Department, 12 from Home, 11 from Housing, 10 from Health and Social Services and 13 from all other departments and committees.

Of the total, 29 were established staff (civil servants), 17 were teaching staff, 13 were public service employees ('manual workers') and nine worked in other areas.
