An employee, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the company, which handles roles such as check-in and baggage handling for Flybe and Blue Islands, recently held a meeting with staff to announce that 18 employees would be going.

Those who were kept on would see their hours cut by a quarter, he said.

Workers were brought to tears by the news, saying that they would be unable to survive on the reduced hours even if they kept their jobs.

Menzies confirmed the changes were due to the loss of its Blue Islands ground handling operation from 1 March.
