Traffic wardens started inspecting cars in St Peter Port's 10-hour car parks – including North Beach, Salerie and the Odeon – from 5.30am yesterday.

They identified about 150 vehicles with the clock set incorrectly. Mostly the problem was that clocks had been set for between 7am and 8am, even though the cars had been parked much earlier.

In total 61 fixed penalty notices were issued, which was 40% down on the last time police carried out a similar operation.

'A lot of people put up their clocks when they arrive the afternoon before and put 8am on their parking discs,' Special Constable Jeremy Masterman, pictured, said.

The three parking wardens checked to see which cars had pre-set clocks. If the vehicles were still there after 8am, they were given a parking ticket.

On Tuesday Guernsey Police posted a warning on Facebook that the early morning checks would be taking place.
