For nearly two weeks the Condor Rapide has been tied up in St Malo, commandeered by staff fighting to have the Bahamas-flagged vessel re-registered in France so the crew can benefit from French employment laws.

A Condor spokesman said negotiations had taken place over the weekend and yesterday, but no agreement was reached.

'With the half-term holidays in mind, Condor Ferries would like to see the strike ended in a fair and long-lasting manner, so that islanders wishing to travel to Europe are able to do so and for the islands to be able to welcome visitors from the continent too,' he said.

n Workers in Portsmouth are set to protest today in an effort to target Condor over the 'exploitation' of foreign staff.

The campaign is supported by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers and the International Transport Federation.
