Trott out of the running for role of chief minister

LYNDON TROTT will not be seeking election as chief minister, he confirmed this morning, which means the vote should now be a straight choice between Jonathan Le Tocq and Allister Langlois.

Deputy Trott, pictured, said that he had made the decision not to stand after much deliberation and against the advice of many of his supporters.

'Ultimately, this is about what's best for the Assembly and for the Policy Council,' he said, 'and I have come to the reluctant conclusion this will best be served by an existing minister taking Peter Harwood's place.'

The surprise decision – Deputy Trott's supporters were quietly confident of his winning – follows the disclosure that thinking is well advanced on the possible introduction of a general sales tax in 2019.

'As a believer in corporate responsibility, it would be very difficult to lead a council potentially committed to GST while I so passionately believe it is utterly wrong for Guernsey,' he said.
