Pensions reform deadline is now set for summer

UNIONS must agree to pension reforms 'without delay' or they will go to the States for debate in May, ministers said yesterday.

The Association of States Employees' Organisations (ASEO) is due to meet in the next couple of days to mull over its position.

Despite an initial deadline of 10 February, unions asked for more time to consider the Policy Council's offer of arbitration.

'The Policy Council hopes that ASEO will agree to the proposed procedure and demonstrate its commitment by engaging in the process without delay.

'If ASEO is not able to agree to the proposed procedure, the Policy Council intends to submit a report for consideration at the May States meeting recommending revisions to public sector pension arrangements,' it said in a statement.

'This timetable is slightly different to that earlier announced in order to give ASEO plenty of time to consider the proposal of mediation/arbitration which the Policy Council remains convinced would be the best procedure.'

Public sector workers have previously threatened strike action if the reforms were forced through without being softened.
