Detailed housing data shows island failing to keep up with demand

GUERNSEY is falling far short of targets to increase housing in the island to keep up with demand, the latest housing bulletin has revealed.

Torteval, St Peter's and Forest have exactly the same number of houses today as they had in 2011.

In the Vale the number has dropped.

The island aims to create at least 300 new homes each year, but the Guernsey Annual Housing Stock Bulletin reveals that just 171 were built last year. While this is an increase from the 84 created in 2012, it is still far below the target.

There are 26,372 domestic properties in the island – 8,589 of these are in St Peter Port. In Town the number of homes has increased by more than 200 since 2011. St Sampson's has 40 new homes over the same period, St Martin's 31. St Saviour's 25, Castel 23 and St Andrew's 17.

However, some parishes have not grown at all. Torteval has 404 homes, St Peter's 884 and Forest 630 – and these numbers are the same as three years ago.

Vale has actually shrunk by 17 homes, to 3,846 over the same period.
