TV licence non-payment could be decriminalised

ISLANDERS could avoid getting criminal records for not paying for their television licences, if Guernsey decides to make the issue a civil offence.

UK ministers are currently considering making the non-payment of the licence a civil, rather than criminal, offence.

The Home Department oversees local broadcast rules.

A spokesman said the department was aware of the debated rule change.

'The department intends to monitor developments in the UK and consider the potential implications for the Bailiwick,' he said.

Deputy Dave Jones, pictured, has been an outspoken opponent of the television licence and the way the law has been implemented in the island. He is fully behind the UK plans.

'I think we should most definitely adopt them,' he said. 'I have not been in agreement with the process for some time – that not having a licence for electrical equipment should be a criminal offence. It should be civil.'
