As chief secretary to the British dependency's government, he will run a civil service of nearly 900 people from a population of 4,000.

His new role comes with a house, paid-for utilities and a return trip back to the UK each year. Facilities like broadband however can cost three-times as much as in Alderney.

'It is a challenge,' he said.

'The job in St Helena is not about the money – it's about feeling I have something I can offer.

'It was a difficult decision for my wife and I to make, but we have decided the time is right for us to move on. I am confident that the organisation is moving in the right direction and I wish my successor well in capitalising on the excellent start we have made.'

St Helena, pictured, currently has no airport and it takes five days by ship to get there from Cape Town, South Africa.
