Lights off at landmarks as island backs Earth Hour

CASTLE Cornet, Fort Grey and the SeaGuernsey Mast will be cloaked in darkness tomorrow night as part of Earth Hour.

The global initiative, aimed at heightening awareness of excess energy consumption and climate change, is to focus the minds of people every day as to how much power they are using – and to try and cut back.

States energy policy adviser Steve Morris believed the island was doing its bit, slowly but surely, to tackle the issue.

Foremost has been a department-wide drive to reduce energy use, with one in particular delivering startling results.

'Education has cut its energy use by 20% since 2010, which is a remarkable achievement. Overall States energy use is down 7% in the same time, which saves £500,000 on electricity every year. This is a long-running issue, but it is about cumulative savings and it does take a long time to achieve.'
