Tidal technology company OpenHydro and Alderney Renewable Energy have signed a deal for the 300MW project – 150 turbines – which would be big enough to power 150,000 homes.

ARE executive director Declan Gaudion, pictured shaking hands with Open Hydro's Thierry Kalanquin (left), said it paid the States of Alderney £500,000 a year as part of the 65-year licence, which ARE secured in 2008, to develop marine renewable energy projects in the island's waters.

Mr Gaudion said that this would be replaced with the financial contribution the States would be given for each unit of power produced when the turbines are working.

This is predicted to be £800,000 a year for the full 300MW project, but more developments are planned.

'The objective would be to have another project and then another one and another one,' said Mr Gaudion.
