Fontaine tenant may face eviction

TREASURY may end the lease of the only Fontaine Vinery compound user yet to apply for planning permission.

The department said that would be a last resort if the tenant did not submit an application.

'It is a requirement of the terms and conditions of the leases for the compounds that tenants comply with all planning enactments and that they do not commit any breach of planning control,' a spokesman said.

'Where a tenant commits a material breach of its obligations under the lease then, ultimately, the department is entitled to take steps to terminate the lease.'However, it would work with tenants to try to avoid that happening.

The site's 12 temporary compounds were set up by Treasury and Resources on a trial basis to encourage the growth of small businesses – Fontaine Vinery has been ring-fenced for future housing development.

Users clashed with the Environment Department earlier this year when it introduced new restrictions preventing tenants from having more than one storage container on each plot.
