Under a recommended new rule, participants in the top eight tiers of English football would not be able to gamble on any match.

The Football Association's Council members have agreed the recommendation and it will go before shareholders at its annual general meeting on 21 May.

An FA spokesman has confirmed the rule would apply to any footballer playing in the Premier League down to the regional divisions of the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues - otherwise known as Step 4 of non-league and above.

The Ryman South league, which Guernsey FC plays in, is classed as Step 4.

Guernsey FC has declined to comment about the proposal because of 'contractual reasons'.

Individual players approached also declined to comment as they had been advised not to.
