Battle over drink and drugs issues needs attitude change

ATTITUDES towards drugs and alcohol will have to change or Guernsey will continue to battle the problem, its strategy coordinator has said.

Andrea Nightingale said she was not surprised that islanders, in a recent survey, perceived the two substances as the biggest causes of crime because of the amount of media coverage they both received.

But she said it did highlight challenges.

More than 1,000 people were consulted for the Home Department's inaugural crime and justice survey.

When asked to identify the three major causes of crime, alcohol came out on top at 66.9%, followed by drugs at 54.5% and lack of discipline from parents (44.9%).

Mrs Nightingale said there was already a lot in place to combat alcohol and drug abuse, which was making a difference.
