Lawyers pay just £600 towards Bailiff's portrait

GUERNSEY'S law firms donated just £600 towards an expensive portrait of former Bailiff Sir Geoffrey Rowland – leaving taxpayers to foot most of the bill of more than £13,000, it has been revealed.

The 'voluntary contribution' by the firms towards the painting, which cost a total of £13,358, accounted for an average donation of just £3 per advocate.

The remainder of the cost, a total of £12,758, was drawn from the Policy Council's administration budget.

The price of the painting, by renowned portrait artist June Mendoza, included her travel and materials.

Batonnier Mark Helyar, pictured, representing the Guernsey Bar Council, said the creation of the portrait was entirely a matter for the States.

He said the council did not have the power to make donations and individual firms were invited on a voluntary basis to make contributions.
