The faithful record of a farmer's life and hardship during the war years is told in the form of a letter to his wife and young daughter who were evacuated to the north of England. Packed with details of how he survived despite harrowing food shortages and exhaustion, how the community hoodwinked the occupying forces on everything from vehicles to crystal radio sets, how families and friends made it through harsh winters and lonely Christmases, and how an unlikely friendship with the enemy developed, the diaries which start in today's Guernsey Press with a three-page feature and continue in another two-page special tomorrow are a must-read as the island celebrates Liberation Day.

An appeal has gone out to find out who penned the lost stories as well as what became of him and his family once their island was freed.
