Staff at the Landes du Marche branch raised the alarm just before 3pm when they saw a bag, which was later identified as a laptop case.

Two hours later officers confirmed the case contained only paperwork.

The bomb disposal unit was on the scene within minutes of being called and was joined by fellow officers who cordoned off the road from the Camp du Roi traffic lights to Shiloh Church at about 3.20pm.

Staff from the bank and the adjoining garage and businesses based in it were evacuated shortly afterwards, along with residents – many of whom said they were very worried.
