Deputy joins online campaigner for Green Acres

A FORMER senior nurse who up until recently sat on the board of Health and Social Services has been left bitterly disappointed after plans to convert the former Green Acres Hotel into a specialist dementia care home were scuppered.

Commenting on a dedicated Facebook page set up in light of a planning appeal refusal, Deputy Sandra James, pictured, said she had always supported the project since the original application.

'I too am very disappointment the continued planning permission refusal persists. It is extremely unlikely this dilapidated structure will ever become a hotel again.

'The greatest need for nursing/residential beds in the future will be for EMI (elderly mentally infirm)'.

An appeal against a planning refusal for the scheme was rejected last week over concerns that Guernsey would lose a viable hotel.

During the appeal hearing in March, HSSD acting chief officer Malcolm Nutley was called after the panel heard dementia patients were blocking beds because homes for the elderly could not care for them.

At the time he confirmed that two patients in Princess Elizabeth Hospital beds were awaiting permanent spaces.
