MORE than 50 years of dedication by a local historian was celebrated yesterday as one of the life works of the late Hugh Lenfestey was published.

His book, Guernsey Place Names, details the origins of addresses, traced back via family names and descriptive terms for the locations or their use.

The research was completed just before Mr Lenfestey died in 2012 and was the result of 50 years of research into different historical sources.

Speaking at its launch ceremony at the Island Archives, which was attended by friends and people who helped the historian in his mission, his wife, Gillian, said the work showed true dedication.

'He was proud to be a Guernseyman and he took Guernsey and the Guernsey accent everywhere he went,' she said.

'This is a real contribution to the island and his way of saying thank you to Guernsey and to have a permanent memorial for the island.

'Over the centuries names have been given to places and fields for a number of reasons – this means those names will not be forgotten and the people who named them will not be forgotten.'
