Under the direction of the Neighbourhood Policing Team this represents the largest ever deployment of police on two wheels.

Neighbourhood Policing inspector Liz Orton said similar previous initiatives had been a real hit with the public and the force was keen to capitalise on its popularity.

'It was such a success last year that we asked for expressions of interest from the officers and these guys came forward.

'They are highly visible and easily accessible. In a car people can see the police, but not stop them, but on the bike they can stop them and discuss issues. They started in June and will end in October.'
