Schools guru steps down from Education

A FORMER head teacher hailed as the man who could help overhaul Guernsey's schooling system has resigned from the Education board saying he had 'lost confidence' in the department.

Denis Mulkerrin (pictured) was elected onto the department's board as a non-voting member in September 2012 after he wrote two critical reviews of primary and secondary education.

Following his wide-ranging recommendations, he was persuaded to join the board but he says that was 'an extremely naive mistake' on his part.

In a statement to the Guernsey Press, Mr Mulkerrin said he was frustrated with the time it was taking to make improvements, including those relating to school self-government and the recruitment of teachers.

'I have resigned from the Education Board because I have lost confidence in the Education Department to drive real improvements in Guernsey Education, and in particular to delegate autonomy to head teachers and staff,' he said.
